Back in
May I showed you my improvisationally pieced quilt top which started out quite abstract before slowly resolving into something that looks, to me at least, a lot like a person. I free motion machine quilted it as always, more or less following the general curves of the piece and using both contrasting and matching threads. After finishing the quilting and indulging in some creative consultation with my mom, it became apparent that it not only needed to be cropped, but that the pale background was blending in to the white wall. I therefore decided to mount it on a dark blue quilted background which I think grounds it nicely.
So here it is finished. And many many thanks to Mike for taking all these final pictures. I think he really managed to get great definition in the quilting on the background without washing out the foreground too much. Many of the fabrics are silky/shiny, and they look great in person. I'll keep everyone posted if it goes out into the world.

The dark blue background was a fabulous decision--it intensifies the unity of the piece. And the quilting is exquisite--effectively dense.
ReplyDeleteYou've done it again with another beautiful piece. I like the way you let the curvy edges be and how you mounted it on the blue background. Your fabulous quilting is the icing on the cake.
ReplyDeleteWhoa! awesome-the whole quilt! you and your mom were right on target with the deep beautiful blue background. There is a reference to a person in the quilt-maybe a bust. To me I thought of Arab sands and the multi colored fabric of the desert. My designing is traditional and representational so I am always awed when I see a quilt like yours.

What a difference that dark blue fabric makes. I love how the quilting ties the mounted piece to the background. Ingenious solution.

ReplyDeleteShannon, this is an amazing piece~! The blue was a brilliant decision. Did you finish it with a self-faced binding? Or is it mounted on canvas? I really love works that can be different things to different people. I see a bird's head with a giant eye looking past my right shoulder, its large, blunt bill dominating the rest of its face, the neck curving away and down, and sweet plumes falling in curves off the back of the head in the upper left area. So much to hold your interest in this!! What a spectacular contribution to TGIFF. :D
